What type of work requires a permit?
The Uniform Building Code states:
"No building or structure regulated by this code shall be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished unless a separate permit for each building or structure has first been obtained from the Building Official."
This means that almost anything done to a structure, other than cosmetic improvements (painting, carpet, linoleum, floor coverings, wallpaper, etc.) requires a building permit.
Common projects that require building permits
- Replacing water heater
- Patio covers and shade structures
- Above ground pools over 5,000 gallons
- Detached storage or accessory structure exceeding 120 square feet in floor area.
- Re-roofing - including overlays which cannot exceed three layers.
- Replacing an air conditioning/heating unit
- Outdoor decking over 30" in height
Inspection Requests
Inspection requests can be made by calling Stanislaus County 24-Hour Inspection Request Line at (209) 525 7550. You will be asked to provide information from the building permit. Requests must be received prior to 6:00 a.m. the morning of the desired inspection. We will not be able to guarantee specific times, but requests can be made for either morning or afternoon. It is important that the work be ready for inspection when called and that which is not ready will have to be recalled for the following day. All inspections are made to the codes in effect and the approved plans. If you are making a change in the approved plans, they must be approved prior to calling for inspection.
